Biofilm Fluidized Bed (BFB) Technology for Sewage Treatment and Various Wastewater Treatments.
An Innovative Technology that has been successfully applied, perfected and performance proven in China.

Biofilm Fluidized Bed (BFB) is an innovative technology specially developed for sewage and various wastewater treatments applications. It is an integrated system of fixed film and suspended growth, and hence it possesses advantages of both systems. It uses both activated sludge (suspended growth) and polymer composites as substrates for microbe growth (fixed film). Our innovation comprises of BFB Polymer Composites and Fluidized Bed.

Technical Features

(a) BFB Polymer Composites a specially developed substrate for use as an effective media for microbial growth

  • Surface area 4,500 m2/m3 formicrobial growth – more than 3 times that of bead filter (1,300 m2/m3) and 18 times the trickle filter (530 m2/m3).
  • Pre-impregnated with specific chemicals to make it highly conducive to biofilm formation.
  • Specific gravity 1 to 1.1, close to that of wastewater – lower energy cost to maintain rapid circulation of the media within the fluidized bed.
  • Made of composites of polymer - highly durable and in practice replacement is not required.

(b) Fluidized Bed (bio-reactor): for biochemical degradation of the organic matters and removal of nitrogen nutrient through the nitrification and de-nitrification processes.

  • Unique design to retain media within reactor. No media replacement needed.
  • High pressure air to effect rapid recirculation, increase oxygen utilization and prevent formation of large bubbles at bottom of reactor.
  • Automatic dislodge of matured biofilm to give way for formation of new, fresh and active biofilm.

Performance

The BFB system is more efficient and effective than the Activated Sludge (AS) system:

  • Shorter water retention time (2.5 hr vs 6 -16 hr)
  • Land area: 50-70% saving
  • Lower capital investment : 20-35% saving
  • Lower maintenance cost: 10-20% saving
  • Higher removal rates of BOD (0.6–4 kg/m3.d vs 0.3-0.9 kg/m3.d) & ammonia (reduced from 50 mg/L to 1-2 mg/L vs to 20 mg/L)
  • Modular systems, can be easily upgraded when needed.

Applications

  • For use in new sewage treatment plant or upgrading of existing plants
  • Treatments of wastewater containing high organic matters such as from food processing and beverage industries
  • Treatment of natural water rich in nutrients, such as eutrophic water in the reservoirs, lake and golf course ponds.
